The artist Hanna Sass utilizes the traditional process of multi-color woodcut, thereby creating a unique connection between a gestural and expressive working method and the woodcut technique, rich in tradition and originally intended for reproduction.

Hanna Sass processes the printing blocks in a rough manner with angle grinders, knives, and wood chisels. This emphatically physical work stands in a tense contrast to the careful printing process, in which usually several plates are printed one after another.

After each printing process, the artist continues to work on the printing blocks, thereby employing a sub-form of woodcut, namely the so-called lost-block technique. Lost because the individual intermediate stages are discarded and the process, quite contrary to the traditional intention of reproduction, can no longer be repeated.
