Description
The original woodcut from the series .../2/17 by Hanna Sass dates, as the title of the work already indicates, from 2017. The artist Hanna Sass uses the traditional method of multi-color woodcut, thereby creating a unique connection between a gestural and expressive working method and the woodcut technique, rich in tradition and originally intended for reproduction.
Hanna Sass processes the printing blocks roughly with angle grinders, knives, and wood chisels. The emphatically physical work stands in a tense contrast to the careful printing process, in which usually several plates are printed one after another.
After each printing process, the artist continues to work on the printing blocks, thus utilizing a sub-form of woodcut, namely the so-called "lost-block" technique. It is lost because the individual intermediate stages are gone, and the process, quite contrary to the traditional intention of reproduction, can no longer be repeated.
